Homework #13

What: Infographics

Function: It visually explains and displays information.

Where: PRINT magazine

Quality: The quality is good in that although there are many things going on and there isn't a set pattern in the way the elements are laid out, it shows that the designer thought out the composition as the work overall does not look amateurish. The randomness and irregularity of shapes make the piece more interesting.

Style: (1) Early Modern/Dada- the use of different sizes and weights of the letters (on the left) remind me of Dada works. Words that are slanted and arranged randomly also reflect the typography of Dadaism. Simple geometric shapes, arrows, and colors of black, white, and red are motifs that early modern designers loved to use as well.
(2) Postmodernism- the cut-out pieces of type are common uses in Postmodernism. The non-functional rotations and the overlapping of elements can also be found in Postmodern designs.

What attracted me: I was attracted to the freedom of the elements in the composition. The imperfect cut-out shapes and overlapping elements do not make the piece look strict, fixed, and machine-like. Rather, you can see the hands behind them, especially through the hand-writings.
